A Spring Play for Brighton Mummers #1

Part of starting this magazine and something that I haven't managed to achieve to date is to properly document the development of a new play and all the associated props, costumes, ritual and farce that inevitably come with it.

After this year's ludicrous Brighton Mummers tour, there's been a lot of energy to do some more, so we don't have to wait until the start of the practice season next Hallowe'en. The general thoughts have been that we don't want to rush anything, but we'll slowly put something together that has meaning and energy - something that feels worth doing. The Grey's gave the initial impetus for all this, in that they offered to host us on St George's day, but having done some fairly shoddy day-time plays in the past, I'm reluctant to do anything unless its's got the thing.

So Mark & I met and plotted and drew things and came up with some good ideas that could be focal points for a simple framework, that follows thus:

George & the dragon. The dragon is in a huge egg which gets dragged through the streets on a sled. Different characters confront the dragon but are all killed while George chickens out of defending them. Eventually, George must face the dragon alone...

For me, it's all about the egg. I'll post some drawings and diagrams soon.
